Common Windows 95 Client32 Questions

Question #001

After installing any 3.x client, I have have had problems with either IP or Internet connectivity.  What could cause this problem.

Solution

The Novell Client 3.x and higher will automatically apply the Microsoft Winsock2 upgrade to the PC during the client install. The following steps will help you backup off the Winsock2 upgrade to the original Winsock1.1. During the upgrade, the old Winsock files are saved and a batch file is created to perform the downgrade process.

1)Run C:\WINDOWS\WSBAKUP.BAT
2)Restart Windows with the – "Command Prompt only option"
3)Again run C:\WINDOWS\WSBAKUP.BAT
4)Restart PC Normally

The reason this must be run twice is that the batch files both makes registry entries and restores old files.

The registry entry updates require windows for the updates to occur. The files, however, cannot be restored due to file locking while windows is running. Thus the first run will correct the registry while the second backdates the files.

Question #002

How do I prevent the Winsock 2.0 upgrade from occurring during the install of client 3.x?

Solution

Edit the NWSETUP.INI from the Novell Client installation source directory.

Comment out the "2=WS2SETUP.EXE, <, 1998" line in the [Client.Run] section. This section should look like the following after commenting out this line:

[Client.Run]
1=WS2NSINS.EXE /install,>=1998
;2=WS2SETUP.EXE,<,1998
3=AXDIST.EXE,<,1111

Question #003

Why does Novell include the Winsock 2.0 upgrade in it’s client package.

Answer

Winsock 2.0 is required for SLP (Service Location Protocol) and the IP Gateway. If you do not need these services, then do not need to do the Winsock 2.0 upgrade.

Question #004

I believe that I need the Winsock upgrade, but it causes problems on my machines.   What should I do?

Answer

The Winsock 2.0 upgrade seems to work better if it is installed prior to the client 3.x upgrade. Try pushing the WS2SETUP.EXE prior to the deployment of the 3.x client. The upgrade could also be pushed via a snapshot.

Question#005

Since I upgraded from the Microsoft Client for Netware Networks I can no longer share hard drive and printers. What do I need to do?

Answer

The Novell Client does not support peer-to-peer networking. You need install the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks and also File-and-Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Question#006

My workstation does not have much memory, what can I do to reduce the resources used by Client32?

Answer

Change the "Max Cache" setting in the client from 0 to 1024.  The default value of Zero does not truly mean zero, but rather forces the Client to use a default percentage of RAM for cache.  The value of 1024 or smaller number will actually use less memory than 0.
